Branching hammer dividing?

I noticed when my branching hammer divides it usually splits across a head and then divides that way. I notice when it does this initially the tentacles shrink up and don't expand fully on the dividing head. Has anyone else had that happen? I've had the same head divide twice this month. I've gone from a 2 headed piece to almost 4 now because the largest head is currently becoming 3.
