In this vain, I have a barb in my freshwater tank that has jokingly been referred to as “scoliosis” for a couple of months now. (He swims sideways with his head pointed the opposite direction from where he wants to go!). His condition has recently worsened and he is clearly going to die. Is it more humane to net him (no doubt stressing him and the tank immensely) in order to give him a quick death, or just let him pass naturally?

I have put one fish down via freezing. I think you'll know what is right.

6 other completely healthy barbs, and numerous other fish, all healthy. I had assumed old age, but it’s weird that the symptoms were/are the same.

At this point I'd chalk it up as coincidental unless a 3rd fish does the same.
Then you'd know for sure there's an issue.
