Brand New 8 gallon bio cube

IMHO, the turnover rate kind of depends on how you have your sump set up. If you are going to have a refugium, then I believe slower is better. 4-5 times turnover through the sump would be what I would shoot for with a refugium (unless you have a remote refugium, then you can dial that to the flow rate you want). Lots of debate on the subject and people have different opinions. Just depends on what you find works for you.

It would have to be really sweet and not bully (or worse) my little guys.

Tomini, two spot, white tail, yellow eye kole, square tail...

Any Ctenochaetus will be just fine. Get him small, they grow quickly anyway and will learn that the little guys are friends. They aren't an aggressive tang anyway. Not like the Acanthurus.

wellllll, my yellow eyed kole tang is the king/queen of the tank. however, before i added other tangs, he/she was very peaceful with my other fish.

Yesterday he looked at the empty tank no less than 100 times. Reading books half the night...the wheels are turning.
im excited to see what yall do with this aquascape and livestock wise.

His Oregon tort is so blue it almost hurts your eyes to look at it!
pics or it never happened!!!!! lol.
Also, if you need the most basic sump setup ill show you mine.

A Tang. An ich magnet. In our tank. A year ago I would have said no way. @najer this is your fault.
From what I've seen, the bristle tooth family I just mentioned to you are a lot more resilient than the much larger tangs. Still, more susceptible than fish with a thicker slime coat.

Forgot about the fuge. That may make things different. I'll let others weigh in on that .

@najer those are crazy horrible numbers. You know your tank is just asking for a crash.;) (sarcastically)
You've got an amazing tank.

Yellow eye koles are pretty chill. Just save room for the mandy.

I was thinking just a gate valve? Will that work?

I have never had a sump, but I will note this. A gate valve does need several turns to turn off the flow, but you know it will turn when you need it. Obviously a gate is easier to turn in general. I saw someone recently used a ball valve. Since it was almost never used, it built up salt creep on the ball and proved impossible to turn when needed. Even if you could run and grab a pipe to put on the lever for leverage, it will take time. If you turn it often as @Fin mentioned maybe it would be okay.

Today I feel a little nervous. Can we do this? Hippie kid is much more confident. Nothing intimidates him.

You are doing this.

They also sell valve lubricant that I usually apply to the ball inside of the valve. Dow Corning 111 is what I use. I think they changed the name of it since I bought a tube (lasts forever). This is the same stuff that OceansMotions used to lubricate the parts of their 4way - 8way valves. Also good to protect gaskets and seals.
