Brand New 8 gallon bio cube

Baby pictures, eh? Me and my first fish - a flounder. The Story: Look at the rod & reel. It was an old toy from the dime store. The kind that had a magnet on the end of a line and you could pluck fish with a metal plate on the inside out of the baby pool. Plastic reel and a thin metal rod for the pole. My dad thought it would be funny to put a hook and bait shrimp on the end of the line to keep me occupied while the adults were fishing. I dropped it off the bank and had the fight of my life landing that fish! Ha!

Do I need anything to stablize the drill? What if it moves? Do I need that moat of clay around the drill spot for water to pool? Or can I just run a hose over the surface I’m drilling. So many questions. Lol

I havent use the most method just flow of water, I do use tape.. it sure it’s necessary but I haven’t had any problems, I don’t stabilize I go slow and it do it from a position of dominance so that my weight and not my strength allows the drill to make its groove and then it flows nicely.

@Hemmdog
Thanks for the kind words
Life happens...
After watching a perfectly healthy woman go from shortness of breath to lung cancer, pancreas cancer to over 50 tumors on one side of her brain all in less than a year = I haven't had a cigarette in 3 1/2 years now. Everything happens for a reason, at least I won't have to say goodbye to my daughter when she's 30. The rate I was smoking it was very likely.

My mother asked me what I wanted for my wedding present and I asked her to stop smoking. She did it cold!! Then proceeded to die of lung cancer diagnosed 10 years later right about the time you are supposed to be back to normal population risk. Asked me to call her in some antibiotics bc she was coughing up blood, I wouldn’t she got mad I convinced her to go get checked out and that was the beginning of the end. Slow and hideous and fairly preventable disease!!
Anyway, good thing you did there for yourself and your daughter!

Ummm, are you speaking of tanks or some other thing? I mean, after all, you do have 6 kids!

Sorry your mom had to go through that and you had to witness it.

Outstanding! Early 60's?

@Hemmdog, you don’t have to use the putty wall. If you have a helper just have them hold the water hose on it. It’s probably actually better that way. It’s not as bad as you think and when it’s done you’ll wonder what you were making a big deal about.

Or, if you like challenges and have an extremely full bladder you can pee on it while drilling! I double dog dare ya!

Use a cordless drill if you are using the hose. [emoji846]

Or at least a GFCI...

Definitely use a variable speed drill if you have one available.

I have only drilled ceramic containers to add drainage holes.
I like the duct tape on the far side.
Normally the pot I'm drilling has a 1/8" depression on the underside that holds just enough water for drilling.
I'm using a masonry drill bit for most of these holes. Rarely a hole saw bit.

The thin putty wall a few inches put from the drill hole sounds like it will hold a similar amount of water.
And it may help contain the glass dust. Wear a mask and safety glasses. And old clothes.

Maybe have the hose running anyway 20' downhill so you can rinse off with a gentle stream if you need to. [emoji846]

Practice on some old glass and put just a microscopic bit of wieght on it when you drill. Not a lot at all.
Lol they are serious when they say let the drill do the work.

And it's definitely true. [emoji846] the third time is a lot easier. If I don't get too cocky. [emoji849]

@Hemmdog When I drill, I cover the back side with a couple of layers of duct tape. This helps contain the mess. I also clamp a piece of wood on the backside. This helps to keep the bit from breaking through at a severe angle and the bit jamming, causing excessive chipping and maybe even cracking. You can use the flowing water stream, but I always cut the bottom off of a plastic cup and silicone the cup to the tank and fill it with water. I don't use a hand drill. I have a commercial glass drill that I managed to buy from our LFS when they closed. If you were closer, I would drill it for you. Remember, every time you drill with the inexpensive diamond bits, the less effective they become. Personally, I would get two. One to practice with and one to drill the tank with.

Like this set up when I was drilling a panel before assembling the tank.

A dinosaur's account to drilling glass. Back in the day (80s), we didn't have affordable diamond coated hole saw bits. We used these brass bits, along with Carbide Silicon Grain in a slurry to wear through the glass. The result can be just as smooth, if not smoother than the diamond bits. I still use them every now and then. Takes longer, but the holes come out really nice.

Thank you, and sorry for your loss.

@Why-Me You have no idea how funny the job can be! One night my partner stopped a DUI and when I showed up, the driver offered me a beer and then reaches for a Solo cup that was in the floorboard and said "a lady doesn't drink out of a can". Who says the art of being a gentleman is dead!
I believe it, my best friend I grew up with is now a training officer for Henderson/LV nevada. I've hears some funny and crazy stories over the past few years.

what about this ?
