breaking in new skimmer

Would it work to break in a new skimmer using a rubbermaid tote with old water change water?Would you get any skimmate from this?

I'd use the rubbermaid tote and use a gallon of vinegar and freshwater.
Won't get skimate, but it will help break in the skimmer.

Just curious why freshwater and not saltwater?

Not sure.
But I do know it's more about the vinegar removing the manufacturing oils and chemicals.
