If you use a Bulk Reef Supply reactor for carbon and GFO, monitor its output over time. If you see it decline, look for a buildup in the tubing and clean by soaking in vinegar. More likely the loss of output is a result of the three sponges in each reactor vessel getting clogged. Soak the sponges in vinegar to clean them. They will eventually get stiff and clogged and start to deteriorate. At that point, you'll have to replace them. BRS sells replacement sponge sets.
I bought my reactors when they were first introduced and replaced the sponges today because output had dropped to a trickle. The new sponge set consists of a slightly smaller diameter sponge that goes at the end/top of the media container. A wider-diameter sponge goes in the middle of the chamber if you're using GFO or against the carbon to hold it in place. Unlike the original sponge set, this wider diameter helps the sponge stay in position. The third sponge is attached to the screw-on cap, which is a new/better design that allows more water to flow into the container.
Monitor the condition of your sponges. If they get clogged and reduce flow, the effectiveness of your carbon and GFO will be greatly reduced. Of course, you still need to change your carbon every two weeks or so and your GFO monthly.
