Cabbage Coral Growth rate?

I am asking questions and seeking answers from those that have good experience dealing with cabbage corals.

Reefers who purchased a small colony or a few pieces of cabbage corals that have grown massive.

How long did it take to grow?

The reason I'm asking is I thought that this species is a slow growing coral. But after talking to some of my sales reps they believe this coral actually grows faster than SPS after all this is a soft coral.

Am I doing something wrong.

I travel and visit tons of aquariums in United States and I must say that the Chicago aquarium had a massive amount cabbage coral in their aquarium.

The aquarium had to be around 300 or 500gallons with a massive clam in it.

But the whole aquarium had cabbage corals covering all the rocks. It was my first time seeing such a massive spread like this.

I believe that they grew and spread on there own. I don't believe the aquarium purchased a massive quantities and mounted them.

What's your opinions?

Basically I'm asking what is the growth rate on these corals in your experience.

To be honest I always just ordered multiple quantities I've never grown any out.

Soft corals, if given enough time and the right conditions can grow pretty fast. I've kept fingers, toadstools.....in the past and have a toadstool now.

I'd say the ones in the picture took 5-10 years to get like that.

I got one in summer 2017 and it's approximately 3 times larger now then when I got it. However it's actually split into 3 colonies. I think part of the reason is placement. I have mine growing down a rock it got to the point where it grew down so much and it's own weight pulled against it fragmenting it. I've since piled on the 3 colonies so it probably could use a bit more space.

The attached image is just before it split, you can kinda see right in the middle where it's pulling itself down.

I have a neon green one and the growth is incredibly slow maybe tripled in size but it was a really small frag to start.

I sold mine, it got too big for the tank from 3" wide to 12" wide in
1 1/2 year

Unfortunately no picture, it looks similar to andrewkw's picture above, except a little bigger and wider spread
