Calibrate Temp Probes - Apex and Hydros

I am in the process of moving to Hydros and set up only the temp and ph probes for now while the Apex is still running. I purchased the Hydros second hand and wanted to ensure there were no issues before I moved everything to the Hydros. I placed the magnetic hydros probe into the same area as the Neptune and it read 76.0F while the Neptune stated 78.2F. I thought, well that is strange and to try to rule out the magnetic Hydros probe, I tossed in the original temp probe that comes with the Hydros. This thermometer read 76.5F. I figured I’d give it a few days to see if they needed to have the temp normalize throughout the probe. There was no change, so I ordered a NIST calibrated thermometer and checked the temp this evening. The NIST thermometer read 76.5F with a deviation of .5F per the NIST certification document. For over 2 years I thought the Apex had the right temp but I was way wrong. Consider this a friendly reminder to calibrate your thermometers from time to time.

The Hydros does have an offset if you want to get it closer to your standard, but it looks like it is close. The Hydros temp sensors do have an IC chip inside them and do connect to the digital input on the sense port. Also for the heater output settings you can use 2 sensors in the setup if you want.

Yup, I did a correction on the Hydros and Apex. Was shocked by how off the Apex was. I'm now slowly getting the temp back to where I would prefer it. Just don't want to stress anything out.

I honestly think its the luck of the draw! I have 3 apex temp probes sitting here. Hooking my apex back up after a loooong disconnect. and i'm wondering if i should just get a 4th lol. Don't trust the others. What thermometer did you use to calibrate it properly? my old 3, it seemed every time i calibrated, it would swing out of alignment after a day or so. Now i don't trust any thermometers.

You will want to use a certified calibrated thermometer that meets NIST standards. I run two thermometers, both updated to match the calibrated thermometer
