I purchased what was supposed to be a yellow hammer. I put it in the aquarium with my other 2 green hammers. Would the zooxanthellae from the green hammers turn the yellow one green as well? I believe I was sold an item under false pretences. What I believe is the hammer was bleached and now it's color is returning.

For what its worth i picked up a super bleached hammer that was yellow at the time and it turned green once it gained back it's true colors.

I put a pink tip and white tip hammer together in my tank a year ago and they are still pink and white. I stuck the smaller pink inside the white and actually a pink tip frogspawn also so they look like one piece when inflated all the way. Might see some morphs in the future but the existing should stay the same.

This is exactly why I asked the guy how long he had the coral because I wanted to make sure the coral was not stressed etc. He assured me that no, it was a yellow hammer coral with BRIGHT yellow tips and he assured me it was not green before I bought it. They are false advertising as far as I am concerned. Just something quick I found online....

If the rate of photosynthetic production is too high, corals have the ability to control the amount of zooxanthellae in their tissues by expelling it. This is known as coral bleaching, which is normal. However, when corals are immoderately stressed, this causes them to expel more zooxanthellae than necessary, and therefore lose of color results from the expulsion of too much zooxanthellae, and/or the concentration of photosynthetic pigments in these organisms are diminished. Although long term bleaching can cause the partial or total death of coral colonies, if the situation is not too severe and stressful conditions are changed, it is possible for affected colonies to recover their symbiotic microalgae and start growing again.

So he sold me a green hammer. It was stressed and that is why it was yellow in his pictures.

Sorry, I am just extremely upset.

Md I hope you didn't pay more than 30.00 for yours if it was sold as a yellow hammer.

Paul, you should a good point and I think this person is just giving me bs.

Yeah pretty nuts to hype up a coral without truly knowing if it's stressed or not. It's almost like buying a fish with Ich advertised as a rare white spotted variety, and doubling the price.

Honestly you never know and they might actually think it's a yellow and not be aware their system is out of whack. It's hard to tell someones intentions. It could even be a very neon green tip and their particular lights make it look yellow. You never know. With that being said I guess I could have sold my rare albino (bleached) hammer for some big $$$. I almost killed my frogspawn and hammer a few years ago and they literally turned white and then translucent....:xd:
