Can a Reef Tank Feel Complete Without Fish?

Corals may be the centerpiece of our reefs, but fish bring movement, personality, and plenty of activity to the display. They can also bring added bioload, compatibility challenges, feeding requirements, and the risk of disease.

That raises an interesting question: Can a reef tank feel truly complete without fish?

Maybe your ideal display is packed with colorful fish weaving through the rockwork. Maybe one or two carefully chosen fish are enough. Or perhaps the coral, invertebrates, and tiny creatures living throughout the reef provide all the activity you need.

How important are fish to making a reef tank feel complete?

BONUS QUESTIONS:

1) Have you ever kept a fishless (or nearly fishless) reef? What did you enjoy about it, and what felt like it was missing? Photos are strongly encouraged!
2) If you do feel like fish are essential to your reef, how many do you need to make it feel complete?

I chose "it depends." I am at heart a fish guy, always have been, and fish are my favorite part of any given tank.

That said, because of how early in the process we are in our 125 g DT (6 months), I probably spend more time observing our fishless 14 g frag tank that doubles as an invert QT. This is partially because the tank is older (13 months), has more frags, more inverts, and TBS live rock that always has fun surprises.

Once this next QT batch moves into the DT, though, then we'll get the best of both worlds. All the fun stuff will then be in with fish in the same tank!

Honestly, it depends on the kind of tank you are going for. An invert-focused tank with macro algae can feel like a complete tank even with no fish. However, in a mixed reef tank, it does feel like there is something missing when it doesn't have any fish

I have several 20G tanks with only invertebrates, ornamental macroalgae and designer live rock. In one, it has Black Mollies as part of the CUC.

In 30yr mature 75G display, I like Butterfly’s in my garden.

I have never actually kept fishless, but I am considering it. I want to do a dedicated tank for a hellsfire anemone, but to simplify maintenance and to sleep better at night I want to do it fishless.

I would say this is all about the owner. I prefer fish, but the reality is there are not a lot of truly reef safe fish.

I’m the only one so far that’s said they’ve kept a fishless reef. As of yesterday this is not the case but I had a 25 aio sat with no fish for a while as well as my forty for a while. I’m all about the corals, fish are the accessories lol!

I like utilitarian fish at least. I like to have a sixline or small wrasse for pest that don't need sand and a tang or two at least if tank size supports them. I only have 4 fish in my 100g with no plans to add more. I had a single fish in my 20g but have never been fishless.
