Can Niger Triggers be reef safe????

Ive had a pair of niger triggers in my 180 that was loaded with sps and clams, and the only issue was they would swim into the corals, lol. Im not sure if they did it intentionally, but I would occasionaly find small pieces of sps on the sand bed. I knew it was the triggers because they would always have a scrath on their head. Other than that no problems.

He is not to big but I have had him for many months now. I don;t have shrimp but I have never seen him eat shrimp. I did drop some baby serpant stars in the tank the other day they were hiding under some corals I got and my wrasse and him ate them as fast as they could. But he has never touched my adult starfish.

How big is he i was thinking of getting mine small prob a few inches like a baby size

I have kept a niger trigger, blue throat trigger, and a white-tail trigger in reef tanks. None of them disturbed corals, other than throwing sand all over the place. The blue throat took a chunk out of a starfish but left my shrimp alone. The niger and white tail harrassed my snails and crabs, but left the corals alone. I got rid of the niger because he terrorized the other fish. I still have the white tail. I have not kept shrimp with the niger or white tail triggers.

My fish bullied my Niger at first! LOL! Maybe because he is small.

Has he ever eaten any of your small critters snails,crabs etc ???

Well I guess I'll jump in on this thread. I have a niger trigger also, I got him about 10 days ago. So far so good, he is the largest fish in my tank at 3 inches. He doesn't pick on anything in the tank. No shrimp though. He does swim into my acans here and there, kind of just bumping them.

Anyone tried 1 in a 29 gal biocube i was thinking of putting it in there for the main time just tuill it gets to big???

29, that's pretty small they need a lot of swimming room. Mine goes all over my 75 gal.

I was thinking of getting mine at a small size arnd 2-3 inches ive had 1 before in my 29 gal but my clowns picked on it and it starved

I always say its worth a try ill prob just keep it in a net and let it get used to everything and put a non expensive coral in the net with it to test if it will eat my coral or not???

Fish seem to have personalities so "reef safe" is a loose term with some fish. From what I have heard niger triggers eat some inverts and not corals. Even then, what coral should you choose to put with it in the net ? It might decide to eat a coral once it feels safe in you tank. Who really knows with certain fish ? I think it will be fine as long as you keep it fed well.
