Any idea what the things growing out the sides of the stalk are?

Vermatid snail. Coral irritation. Break the little tube off when ever you see them growing.

A little dab of superglue gel works too :)

put epoxy or glue or some sort of blocker , if you cant remove the base, they'll grow back otherwise
