I throw some in a bag once a month or when I remember and leave it in the tank. Im under the assumption it exhausts within the first week or so and just sits there the rest of the time.

+1 on that. Its pretty short lived. I run mine 24/7 with a bag of purigen though. I swap it out once a month. I have other things in the tank that could turn deadly pretty quickly if something happened to them. So yes I'd still run it. It also helps with the smell of fish tank in the house.

It's cheap and efficient at removal of nasties. It just exhausts quickly. I couldn't speak on how long it lasts in a reactor, or how it compares to GFO, because I've never used either.

Do you think it has a positive, negative or no effect on a reef tank with fish in it?

Definitely is a positive. I personally cannot think of any negatives about it. I'm interested if anyone else would like to chime in on that

Let’s see what others have to say because I’ve herd a little bit on both sides about using carbon in a reef tank.

When to mix up fish meal: When was the last time you tried a different brand of food for your reef?
