Just watching my tank and out of nowhere my cardinal of unknown gender had a bunch of circular objects sticking out of its mouth (assuming eggs) it then spat them out after behind chased by the wrasse and now the lump of eggs are stuck to a rock.

Firstly this fish has been alone for more than 1 year it’s previous counterpart he killed. I saw it doing a courtship dance with my foxface however for the past week? What is going on here?

my BF brought up point that LAYING eggs doesn't need mate. Fertilization is why eggs need fish to have mate. May just be an indication of very healthy cardinal. Look forward to other people's opinion.

Still unsure of the gender as females lay eggs? And males hold them in their mouth. Unless it’s a female who laid them and then put them in her mouth due to the lack of having a mate ?

If there is just one and it has eggs then it's a female.

Nearly 1-2 month since the egg laying incident and now seeing the cardinal exhibit the same behaviour as before chasing my foxface and vibrating near it (courtship dance?). That or it’s aggression and how is my foxface losing...

when do cardinals begin nesting. The breeding season can run from March to as late as September. The female will lay 2-5 eggs that are buff-white with dark marks. The female builds the nest while the male keeps a close eye on her and the surrounding territory for predators and other males.
