I imagine it’s a natural process where some polyps become overgrown. Will they die when no longer exposed to light, and flow? Will the decaying polyp tissue have a detrimental effect on tank parameters?

With out light, that will kill.
But I’m not convinced that’s going to happen.
Mine don’t impede on the others, just fill the available area.

Depends on the light/shadowing. Mine just slowly wither away unless i frag it. I dont really notice any problems.

Following along. I have a duncan in a similar situation with some central heads getting crowded and squeezed. I'm hoping the colony knows what it's doing!

I want to get a Duncan next. They seem to be very similar, but I like how the Duncan’s are all “polypy” during the day.

Thanks, I accept the deterioration, as part of overall growth, but glad to hear it doesn’t also spoil the tank. The outer polyps are getting g huge before they split.

As long as polyps are connected with common for them tissue they should receive some nutrition from accessible for a feeding polyps. There should be no problems, but at some point you may need to trim or frag it to a smaller size, to fit the available space.
