Do you know if RFAs spawn when in close proximity to one another or would a spawn occur if you had them on opposite ends of a tank?

Yes to both. When a male begins to act funny and stand up like a trumpet, then spawning is likely to happen within an hour. Once one does it, some of the other males (but not all, given different ones might spawn today, and another group might be a few days from now) will do the same. The ones closer to the first guy respond faster, but eventually (some of) the ones on the other side get the signal and join in. They can release love juice for about an hour, every 15-20 minutes. RFAs on the other side of the tank might take 20-30 minutes to get the hint.

Having all return pumps off helps them respond quicker, and so does taking a turkey baster and capturing the love potion and spreading it around other flowers.

if you left the pumps/flow on , wouldn't that spread the potion around to the other RFAs?

I leave the return pumps off, but keep the powerheads/wavemakers in the tank on!

seeing this thread because of the bump and WOW at this point you have me considering setting up a RFA tank this is so cool
i’ve never kept these and my experience with nems in general is very slim
but these are so cool

Thank you! I am actually on page 10 of it lol. I just started reading through it a few days ago. Another 40 pages to go! Already have learned a ton.

Can we see an update on your system? How many babies are you crunching out? How many of them actually get to the quater size? Are there actually people out there with big breeding setups and selling these? Or are most or all of the vendors just taking them from the wild.

I love RFAs a lot. It would be really nice to see aquaculture breeders take over in terms of sales, and no more or very little wild collection done. I want to setup a system soon just for breeding RFAs. In my 3 tanks I probably have 20-30. Mine just started making noticeable babies after a few years.

I'll take some new pics this weekend after I do a water change and clean it up a bit. It's really been neglected other than water changes lately. It's fishless and has served as my QT for the past year or 2.
