I got a delivery of 1lb chaeto for my new refugium I’m setting up in my sump, I won’t say from where because I want to give them the chance to make it right.

It smells like rotten eggs and is full of dead amphipods and ceriths. It is a little darker green than I would like to see. Cost $155 lol. Pitch it? Or rinse it and put it in?

You can honestly probably just rinse it and put it in.

My advice in the future, would be to just find a local reefer with some chaeto they'd be willing to hook you up with or sell you a bit of. You live in Santa Cruz, the reefing community is pretty big in the Bay Area.

Yeah the more I think about it I’m just gonna ask for a credit on it. It’s a new tank and I dont want to start with rotten algae which it appears to be. Kinda dark green and the dead pods and ceriths are a warning sign lol

I take chaeto to my LFS in dry bucket, no water. I've had that stuff out of water over 24 hours with no issue getting it to grow. Just get a little salt water or rodi and rinse it off.

And this is not an emergency.

I always rinse new Cheato in freshwater. Sometimes even soak it for an hour or 2..Can take a water hose & rinse it clean..I do this to avoid introducing anything to my tank ESPECIALLY bristleworms..

I had the same experience. And from a great vendor so I don’t think it’s too uncommon. It smelt god awe full. I rinsed the crap out of it with a few different runs of tank water and ro. After that it was a little better smell wise so I discarded any loose stuff and reluctantly put it in my fuge. It’s been fine.
