chalices receeding in the middle

why would some of my chalices be receeding in the middle of the colony?? never seen this before???

I will take some pics tomorrow??

salinity 36.0ppm
calcium 360ppm
po4 0.05 on hanna
alk is @ 9.0 dkh

they are under 250 watt radiums in a 300 gallon tank

Happened to one of mine also, burned out from the light. Similar to the tips of an acro being burned when replacing a bulb :)

Move it into the shade and keep an eye on it.

that makes sense had them in my 40 gallon and just replaced my bulbs on my t-5 fixture, not happy my oregon mummy eye colonly just got cut into a frag

Where's your mag level?

did not check, but it usually runs around 1300ppm, test tommorow. are chalices sensitive to this level???

Chalices are very sensitive to low mag levels and will bleach out. I don't think 1300 is too low, but I like to keep them around 1450.

Definitely something you want to check out.

Good catch Ian, I looked right past that and the calcium is a bit low as well.

Also be careful about raising Mag levels too fast, I did this and it had a negative affect. Raise it slow and steady if you do.

If there was a random hole, I found my peppermint shrimp eatin out of the eye after I had fed it, could be something picking at it??

no random holes, receeding on my bazooka joe, BGM,Oregon mummy eye,pumpkin patch.

the receeding is at the center of the colonies, which I thought was bizarre. the tank they were in only has a small tang. never had any issues and have had him for years.

I guess i will start dosing mag on a regular basis, i thought water changes would keep this level

Get your Ca up around 400-435 as well. :)

Will make the changes to day, I think the reason my alk and cal are out of line is due to low mag, I have a profilux doser and I stopped dosing mag for some reason:tongue:
