I don't know if anyone has suggested this yet, but I learned a neat tip from an experienced aquarist the other day. I have a 40gal breeder in my bedroom and no extra space for a sump. So I made a small in-tank refugium/bio filter. You just take any water bottle, cut off the bottom, stick a sponge toward the top and then a little cheato or caulerpa under the sponge. Then stick the opening of the bottle over the intake of a small powerhead. Pictures attached. I do not have scientific data on the effects, but since using this method my water quality is improved. You don't have to use the plants, even just a sponge works as a great mechanical filter using this method. Enjoy!
