cheap frag plugs???

I've heard of using small tiles that you can find at Lowe's as a cheap alternative to frag plugs. Well I went and bought 2 packs of tiles, but am afraid of them leaching something into my water. One pack is glazed porcelain and the other is chiaro & noce mosaic...I just need to know if these are safe to use.

You may want to return the glazed. Not that they will harm your coral but I found them, with experience, that they lack the texture necessary to securely hold frags. Glue seems to pop right off at slightest hit. Hope this helps.

Editing: Pops off if trying to place on rock. Frags stick to textured side but glazed side lacks texture necessary to firmly secure frag on rock.

You just mount the frag on the back. I have done it in the past.

I meant with trying to place on rock. Glue/putty doesn't bond well with the glazed side.

cut some slots in the face of the tile to give the glue something to grab.

So the mosaics are alright to use? What if I just sand down the glazed side of the porcelain tiles a little? Thanks for the advice.

I use the natural mosaic tiles. the work great. 144 for $10

lots of people sell plugs for real cheap, its almost a waste imo to try and DIY them

I use the same

They work well, and being square makes it handy to be able to
rubber band a second plug next to it for the frag to spread onto

A guy a know uses flat head plastic bolts.

super glue and crushed coral or dry live sand

loctite is expensive to make plugs with hehe. I thought of making them out of aquamend but the consistency of the shape and cost prevented me from doing so.
