Any idea on what my star is doing in this picture? (The brown slime coming from its mouth). Looked things up but nothing really made sense.

That's probably its stomach.

Sea stars evert their stomachs in order to begin digestion of items outside their bodies. What you're seeing is the star hunting for food, attempting to digest the biofilm it thinks is beneath it. Perhaps you've got some fish oil or something on the surface at the moment? <shrugs>
