Here come yet another build thread for myself. I have gone through several tanks in the past but finally hit the nail on the head with this one. I found a used SCA 150G setup "locally" after a short 2.5hr drive I met up with the seller and inspected the tank and all the other equipment. I have a bunch of equipment from my old setups that I will be using so a fair amount of the used setup will not be used.

The tank has a synergy reef overflow with a bean animal drain setup, which is something I was really wanting so I can maximize the space for the aquascape. I was really on the fence trying to decide what to do for a stand (wood/aluminum/8020) and after a lot of restless nights I decided to build my stand out of wood as I have done it the past. I have never really made a stand for myself that I was 100% happy with so really took my time with this one.
I built the frame out of 2x4 and skinned with 1/2" plywood and did my trims with 1x6 and 1x3. I made the doors with euro style hinges and went for the shaker style look. I usually stain my stands but this time I wanted to take a "gamble" and went with paint using a gray color. I really like how the color turned out and happy I went with the change.

The color doesn't show properly in the above picture and will post an updated picture of the color on a later date.

For filtration I will be using the following... 40 breeder sump with a fiji cube baffle kit (really amazing kit and really love the precise cuts and finish on the acrylic, I really recommend this to anyone looking for something along these lines), lifereef skimmer, 57w Aqua UV, mini BRS reactor for carbon. I have an algae scrubber that came with the setup that I will be trying to find a way to make it fit to be able to use it.

Lighting will be radion XR15's two are g5 and two are g4. Will be taking par readings later on to see if I need to increase the intensity or add a 5th light (hopefully not). Have some jebao powerheads for now, but may eventually upgrade to mp40s or gyres. Return pump is a jebao 15000 which seems to be really strong for my setup (even on the lowest setting). I have a jebao 10000 form a different build laying around that I may try to see if I can control the flow a little better.

Picked up about 120lbs of dry rock but didn't end up using all of it and threw in old pieces of rock from the tank I am upgrading from.

As per normal, I played around with the aquascape quite a bit before I landed on something I liked. I didn't use enough mortar for the structure on the right and it fell apart so I ended up redoing it once it went in the tank. But still like how it came out overall.

I still need to paint the doors and work on cable management and get all the power supplies off the ground. There is a partition in the stand to house all/most of my electrical which made it easier but I still hate doing cable management lol. I also need to add some kind of shelf/storage behind the doors to keep my heavily used items with the tank.

I apologise for the lack of detailed pictures and will try to take more as the build progresses but I wasn't planning on making this build thread until now. If there's something you wish to see that I haven't posted please feel free to ask and I'll get to it. Also, if you have any suggestions or think I am missing anything please let me know, I am always open to constructive criticism.

Hope you all had a good time over the holidays and that your new years is just as good!

-Chris

Wasn't able to get too much done today... but I did find a great deal on a turbo aquatics algae scrubber. Made a little drive north of me to make a trade for the scrubber. Really love how you can fit it almost anywhere with it's small form factor compared to other scrubbers out there. This is my first turbo aquatics scrubber and really happy I went this route.

I was able to get the doors done yesterday and feel like they came out pretty decent. I added baskets behind the front doors to keep my most commonly used small items for quick access. Next I need to tackle the crazy bunch of wires that I have in my "electrical section," I would also like to add some in stand lighting with a switch or motion sensor so that I can see inside the stand when I open the doors. Just can't fully think of how I would want to do it. I also have a DIY breakout box that I and thinking of using for my ATO container... Adding a float switch to send me an alarm via apex when I have about a gallon or so left in the container.

Took some par readings and if I bump my lights to 80-90% I can get about 350par on the top of my scape and about 120ish on the sand bed. I am contemplating adding a 5th XR15 either g4 or 5 depending on what I find. I would add the 5th light in hopes of being able to achieve a little higher par while running at a lower %. I'm just not sure if it'll make as big of an impact as I'm hoping for. The other option is to just leave the 4 lights running at a higher par.

I am also thinking of buying an Avast Marine Plank, just trying to justify the price of it. I don't currently have anthias but would eventually like to add a trio and some leopard wrasses. If anyone owns the plank could chime in (good or bad) it would be greatly appreciated. I keep leaning towards purchasing it just trying to really justify it over my current eheim.

Added a 5th XR15 and I can now get the par I want running a little lower %. I'm happy I pulled the trigger but my wallet is not lol. I now have 3 gen 5s and 2 gen 4s. Might consider selling the gen 4s to upgrade to gen 5s but need to save up a bit for that. I also added more fish that I got from my LFS, unfortunately I had to remove my magnificent foxface and 6 line for now but I prefer to have my blonde naso and pintail. I also added a springer damsel and 5 chromis but my female clown turned it into 3 chromis. Besides that I placed an order with avast for something that I have been really wanting, and I also placed an order for a nice pack from a member on here and it should arrive tomorrow!

Here's an empty FTS from this past weekend.

Frag pack came in today and I must say these frags were actually chunky, I was very surprised by the size v. Price on these! Can't wait to see how they are in the next few days.

I splurged a little and got a nice shiny new toy.

I'll be the first to say that I always thought that the trident was a waste of money. Now that I have one, I think it's worth the peace of mind and really feel like I'll get a better understanding of the swings within my tank. Time will tell I guess. I also picked up a second carpet anemome and is currently in QT getting treated and will hopefully be out into the DT this weekend.

I will hopefully be doing another small "upgrade" tomorrow. Picking up a Geo's reef calcium reactor to run it externally. I like my lifereef reactor but the pump is just so loud. Will update if it ends up happening.

Here are some random coral pictures I took the last couple of days.

Quick update, corals are looking good still and added my second carpet to the DT. Developed a little bit of a low ph problem so I opened the windows and doors and ph went up during that period. With that said a C02 scrubber has been ordered and I plan on drilling a hole in the skimmer lid to have it recirculating. Was debating on installing a solenoid to balance out the ph in case it were to jump too high, but will make that decision once it's up and running.
Also shut down the calcium reactor in hopes to lower the alk a bit, but that is going slower than expected I'm sure due to limited growth. Will continue to leave it off until I get into the ballpark of 8-8.5dkh.

Screenshot of what my apex shows for my pH swing and the trident levels.

Just checked my tank ph and it's up to 7.89 now, everyone has been out of the house all weekend... This C02 scrubber can't come soon enough. Alk has also dropped 8.78, almost time to turn the calcium reactor back on.

Thanks @Z&KFarmsWI for all the likes!

New order from BRS came in today and got a few goodies.

20210204_163822.jpg

Of these things is an Icecap c02 scrubber. I was pretty excited to receive this unit but unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working as expected. I had an initial spike within the first hour of .1 but now it's back to my lower levels of ph several hours and currently at 7.6. It's pretty aggrevating, I checked my pH probe and it's still reading accurate when checked against calibration solution. Tomorrow I'm going to try and see if I could possibly increase the diameter of the tubing and see if it makes a difference.

Starting to see a little improvement with the pH today. Hopefully the trend continues to go up as the days pass. It's still not where I would like it to be but at least it's seeming to move in the right direction, hopefully it's not just me speaking too soon.

Going to be trying out something new and different to me. After reading about the reef moonshine program I have decided to give it a shot and see if I can make it work for me.

ICP test results came back looking pretty decent (better than I thought) but one "issue" I want to address is my nitrates. The results showed that they are at 30. I have since removed the filter blocks in the sump and am in the process of printing cups to replace the filter socks with floss. After doing that my test kit still showed high nitrates so I started a low daily dose of nopox and will most likely start testing nitrates every 3 days until they drop and stay stable.

The reef moonshine method has also been started. I did all my correction doses and started my daily doses. Next week I'll be sending out the new icp test to see how the doses have changed my parameters. I have not seen drastic results as of yet, but also didn't expect to. I have seen some corals that have been mainly closed start opening up though and my clams seem to be opened up bigger than ever before.
