So I had a group of 3 chromis but one died. Can I buy another one or more? I'm curious because I've heard if you don't have an odd number they will fight and if I just add one will the other two accept it?

Chromis will fight is the only true fact about chromis that I have personally witnessed... I have had a large group, just a couple and even 3 fish. They just fight. If you add another one, be sure to add it when the tank is dark and on the opposite end of the other two chromis so it has time to get used to the tank before the "dominance match" begins.

I wouldn't add one to established ones. 4+ would be the minimum I would try. High flow in the top third, swimming space, and frequent feedings go a long way to keeping the peace.

Lots of people keep chromis long term, I've never had an issue.
Odd or even, does not matter

I think many have different opinions of long-term... but yes it can be done given eatbreakfast's suggestions and having several.

I had a group of 6 for 6 years in one tank, 5 in another for 3 years, several other tanks, I always keep them.
My present tank a 120g I have 5 right now, 4mo in so far, they stay very tightly grouped, not a hint of aggression

I buy mine from LA so they have a guarantee. They are known to be cyanide caught and also must be fed more like anthias (constantly) to have good behavior.
