Hello everyone,

This morning I noticed this thing in my tank. I've never seen it before, and I'm guessing it's been in my tank for a long time. It looks like a clam of some sort, but I've never had a clam, so I'm not sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Happy New Year! I would have posted a happy New Year sooner, but I was busy fighting the spirit of a 17th century Moldavian tyrant who was alive and well in a painting at the Manhattan Museum of Art.

I'd guess mussel, not clam, but there's very little practical difference. Filter-feeders, harmless, tend to starve in newer tanks.

Should I leave it?
As mentioned, yeah, keep it. Bivalves are harmless filter feeders; some do well in our tanks, but others tend to starve. If you want to try and help yours do well, you can feed phytoplankton like Isochrysis (Isochrysis galbana [T-Iso]), Chaetoceros (Chaetoceros sp./spp.), and Thalassiosira (Thalassiosira sp./spp.) or a blend containing one or more of those.

I received a clam that looks like a regular clam you would get a the grocery store with my tbsw live rock. It smelled good so I put it in my refugium. It berried itself and every once in awhile I dig him out for a smell test and put him back.
