My maroon clown shimmy or shakes in the sand, is this normal? He made a sort of cave under one rock.

I have had this fish for more than half a year. He one day was shimmying with the intention to make a covering. Now he just shimmies around certain areas and picks up sand with his mouth.

Any recent additions that could have brought something in?

Sometimes they do strange things but I find it's never good when behaviors changes all of a sudden.

I would just keep an eye on his body to make sure nothing is forming. Sounds a bit unusual if you don’t have another clown in there, they usually shimmy and shake when they are asserting dominance and pecking order. Usually the submissive one doing this.
