Clownfish Breeding Thread

Thought I’d make a thread of all us fellow clown fish breeders and those who are new to share experiences, tips and tricks and general helpful information.

Is there anything special that needs to be done?

Not really. They tend to be easy to lay eggs however a couple of things.

- It has been known for clownfish to spawn in community tanks however they are more likely to not then will. There's been cases that a pair has layed eggs for the first time in 8 years in a community tank.
- Clownfish will form pairs however some pairs just never end up laying eggs, some key points to look out early on for is a lot of twitching, both the female and male will get larger. They will start looking and cleaning where they are going to lay, most people suggest using a clay pot however I've always used Discus breeding cones. Some people say it helps for the tempreture to be risen and brown algae growth aswell as a 12 hour light cycle.

Personally, I believe in heavy feeding of protien and fatty foods. I combine enriched brine shrimp and mysis shrimp with garlic.


They lay constantly once they start, once they lay the eggs will hatch in 7-10 days. After that, they will lay another batch in the coming days.


Getting them to lay eggs is easy, raising the fry is not.

Great info thanks. My two clowns are all by themselves in the tank. I feed mysis and some brine. No clay pot but lots of caves with no other fish. Let's see what happens.

Ah, reason I suggest as it's something easily removeable as the parents will eat the fry and they will get sucked up the filter. None will survive. Ideally, you'd need a hatch out tank to take the clay pot out and have them hatch there, they then need rotifers and eventually baby brine shrimp.
