I can't remember where I might have come across this before but I vaguely recall that Spirulina powder can be used as a food source for copepods instead of Phytoplankton in liquid form.

If the Spirulina powder works it would be better as it can be made to go instead of having large bottles of Phytoplanton and having them expire.

Reaching out here to determine if using powder will work 100% fine.

Thanks

Not sure on spirulina to be honest, but phytoplankton is brilliant for your tank not just pods just shake bottle every day and don’t overstock

I assume you are talking about live phyto when you mention liquid form?

I am using RGComplete from reef nutritions, not a live product and not too expensive considering I only dose a small dropper’s worth a day. I have had Tigger cultures running for a few months now with decent expansion (looks like doubling in one week), and probably better if I remember to feed daily. I dispense from the big bottle to a 1 oz glass dropper bottle to feed daily and it takes a month or so to use up the plankton in the dropper bottle.

You can raise 'pods on spirulina powder, just get a food grade supplement powder, it works very well 🙂

I do agree that unless you're trying to feed something like a Mandarin, I think it's better to culture phytoplankton and use that to feed the 'pods already in your tank, plus other filter feeding organisms can benefit from the phyto.

Good luck!

Ok, thanks...just did an online search and looks like all the power forms contain other ingredients such as wheat tumeric, etc.....

You will be fine with algae wafers to, usually it yields better cultures.

It feeds copepods very well ; it's cheap and convenient when you run out of phytoplankton. Only thing with the one I bought is that it leaves an oily film on the surface of my copepods culture.
