Looks like a Gorgonian, needs to be fed every day while polyps are open. Unfortunately they do usually last long in an aquarium.

I've looked for more info on this for awhile now, all I'm finding is red or yellow rod Gorgonian.
which look similar in structure. Just not purple
I fed it Hikari coral gumbo this morning (fourth day in the tank).
should I follow the guidelines for the Red or yellow? Or would you know of a link? still finding my way around this site.

Look up photosynthetic gorgonian. You'll find all kinds of colors. Not sure if yours is photosynthetic but it looks like a gorgonian.

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
