This may be a little bit of a dumb question, but because I am still learning I am having trouble keeping up with all of the names… so can I write names on the frag plugs in sharpie or are there markers or pens that are safe for that

Not dumb at all. Sharpie is okay in my book, I’ve used it myself with no problems. If you want a chemistry answer though, @Randy Holmes-Farley may be able to provide better guidance.

A permanent marker is good when you ship corals and fir the person receiving them to identify which is which. However, the marker writing will fade away overtime as you put those frags in the tank water.

The best way in my opinion is take a clear picture of you coral after you glue them down and right the names in the picture.
Keep updating your pictures as you aquire new pieces.

Ideally you want to take a full tank shot that shows the placement of your corals.

I wouldnt worry about them trade names too much, most vary by vendors anyway. Especially for a lot of lps like blastos, acans, and lobos, you'll see each vendor will have a different name for the same color variations. Zoanthids and acropora are really the only corals that have trade names that are unanimous across most vendors.
