Aquarium: Red Sea XL300
Established: February 12, 2020

Past: I started this tank bare bottom, because I had never done this before and wanted to try it out. I also used 100% dry reef saver rock. This was a big learning curve, as I had always used live rock in the past. It definitely made things harder. I live out in the middle of nowhere and the closest reef shop is about 3.5 hours away. I had a bacterial bloom that lasted 5 weeks at one point. It ended up fixing itself, but I bought a UV sterilizer in case it returned (it never did).

Present: Everything finally settled out, so I added a few test corals a couple of weeks ago. On June 15th I decided to add mesoflakes, for esthetic reasons, although I think a mature bare bottom looks just as good. My last reef tank was a 150 gallon with a large 75 gallon refugium (an no skimmer). This tank utilizes a large skimmer as the main source of nutrient export. Also new to me are filter socks and LED lighting. My past reef tanks utilized metal halide lighting.

Future: I am currently manually dosing 2 part, but plan on adding a calcium reactor down the road in about a year when I'm ready for a clam. I also plan on utilizing the refugium section of my sump once my tank matures. I currently have one mp40 on the tank, which seems to be sufficient at the time. I may add another one and turn them both down as the corals grow out.

I also wanted to include that I also have a 300 gallon mixed reef at my office. If I ever felt like the kole tang needed a bigger tank I’d carry him 30 feet and put him in the big tank. The Red Sea XL300 is in my private office at my office, if that makes sense.

The only thing not stock on my sump is the RO reservoir I added. I am currently running 2 RSR LED 90’s on 100% at the stock 20K setting.

Nice.
I am curious as to what all those different Sinularia look like. Can you get pics and match with what you called them? I keep leathers, so wondering if I need to find a few new ones. :p

Thanks! yeah i can try. They're mostly small frags right now so they do look great and cant really see the growth form. All I have is my iphone, I'm just now realizing how hard it is to take pictures with LED lighting. I guess I need to buy a filter or something!

My phone is pretty useless for pictures, but so am I really. If you happen to have a pair of safety glasses (yellow or orange) you can hold them up as a filter. Works well for blue light.
No rush, I was just curious. I have tons, but I can always find room for more if it takes my fancy. :)

Paddle finger sinularia
(Looks horrible bc I keep moving it lol. It almost looks like a lobophytum frag, but I’ve seen the mother colony and has a totally different growth form)
