Figure I would post pics here instead of hogging space on the reef-pi forum. Near as I can tell these are the numbers on each chip. Hard to see as it is coated with silastic.

The upside is there are very few connections made here - what does the LOOP control do in this case? Is there a master brain interface (e.g. ReefLink)?

I fully expect a serial bus of some kind based on the markting copy. The driver board in this case looks very much like most Chinese BLDC pump controllers (Jebao, etc), they all seem to use the same driver logic with the LM339 comparator and a controller IC of unknown make in that package shape.

The upside is the BLDC controllers can be replaced wholesale if someone wanted to spend the effort. I made some inroads at that awhile back but all the pump parameter tuning and reliable startup were hard to control with an off the shelf solution.

Once the motor started it worked fine though :-D

From what I understand, the Loop system connects all the Current USA devices and controls them via an app. I haven't used the program, it requires the purchase of the hub unit.
Unfortunately, my knowledge level diminishes rapidly as we get to component level. Building circuits with diagrams are no problem and I'm good with troubleshooting but I would probably need something a little more "paint-by-numbers". Any suggestions on an off the shelf BLDC controller that is compatible with reef-pi?

@theatrus i had bought this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D9B6J78/ an off the shelf bldc driver from amazon to experiment with icecap 1K and jebao power heads, but never got the time for it. Now that 2.0 is out of the door, i am thinking of getting back to this,

Totally worth a go. Sensorless is what you want for most three wire pumps. Some EcoTech pumps (Vortech) are actually sensored, but they seem to be the exception.
