IceCap makes a pretty cool sump in many different sizes. If you are opposed to buying one, you might get some build inspiration by looking at them.

I can't think of anything in that size space. Is the stand separated by shelving, can you open up the entire interior without removing any weight bearing pieces.

Add a hob skimmer. Run some media like chemipure elite and purigen in the canister. If you've got a good amount of live rock that will run an effective system. If you think you need more real estate for nitrifying bacteria you could also add something like seachem matrix in the canister.

Ever think of running to small separate sumps. One for your skimmer and maybe you filter pads if you use them or something like bio home media. In the other you could run a refuge. Would require two return pumps though.

Or you could use two tanks tied into each other with piping behind the stand. Then you would only need have one return pump.

I was going to say put a tank in a tank from the 1$ per gallon sale but still don't think you have enough room .
Smaller tank skimmer controlled water height overflows into larger tank with return.
Just trying to think outside the box for you.
