Hi ppl,

After I dosed some bacteria yesterday I just put my protine Skimmer back on and when I opened the cabinet to check if it was running I smelled a pretty strong chrorine sent.
It's the smell of an dressing/shower room of a indoor swimming pool.
I also smell it above the tank.

It would be pretty impossible to be chlorine as the tank is in the 6e week of the cycle and it didn't smell like this before and I used a 5 stage ro/DI filter with 0 tds and rscp salt.
There was no one other than me at the tank the past days.

Could I mistake the smell with a big amount of ammonia or something else?
I don't have anything on hand to test if it is really chlorine.

All equipment is new btw except protine Skimmer but I cleaned the Skimmer with tap water before use witch cloud never result in this smell.
No pumps, probes or heaters..
The water in the fresh salt water bin and the ato water does not have the smell.

Are you sure the stuff you dosed was bacteria? Do you still have the packaging?

Have you tested your Ammonia?

Yes it are certainly bacteria I dosed..
These bacteria need to be activated in an activator (just an heater) and the activator divice does not smell.

Just tested the ammonia and it's pretty mutch zero..

I would be shocked if it were chlorine after a 5 stage RO/DI. Your sense of smell isn't the best test of what is going on with your tank. Did you buy a BRS RO/DI? Those come with chlorine test strips.

I've never used that brand of bacteria, but from a simple internet search it says it's bacteria and food.... Could you be smelling the food for the bacteria that comes with it?

It could be.. The powder with the bacteria doesn't smell remotely like this and it didn't smell like this when I thrown it in the tank.
And the food for the bacteria is not dosed in the tank..
The powder is heated in salt water for 24 hr and than after cooling to 25c it is poored in the tank and the sludge that settled on the botem of the activator (food) is not dosed.

The smell out of the tank is pretty strong..
When I open the cabinet I smell it immediately.

I did find one bacteria that smells like bleach.. So it might be possible it is a bacterial smell.
Eikenella corrodens: Smells like bleach

I don't run carbon btw

Found an article of some one with a similar situation.
He threw a piece of live rock out of some one else's tank and dosed a carbon sourse in an already established tank.

No clear awnser but it seemed to be coused by bacteria.

And I to had a 100 point increase of Redox from 350 to 450 and a ph drop of 0.15.

Heey,

--- English Version ---

There are chlorine tests you can do to determine wether or not there is chlorine in your tank, get one of those definetly worth it in this situation, may I ask where you live abouts, if it's in the province of Utrecht, try going to Ocean & Lake they're very friendly and will definetly be able to help you, don't forget to bring water they'll be able to check the parameters for you.

The water in the Netherlands has no chlorine in it, so it can't possible come from water, the reason people use an RO/DI machine in the Netherlands is to remove certain elements that promote algae growth.
There for I personally don't use an RODI machine, as I don't have algae growth.

Mine did the same after using Seachem bacteria to cycle. I bleach cured some old rock for use in my tank, was a little worried about the smell so I added seachem Prime to ensure any chlorine would be taken care of.
Probably nothing but I’d add to be sure.

I noticed a similar smell after dosing yeast fed bacteria into my tank. It went away after a few days. But I'd assume it's the yeast in the bacteria blend.

I live in North Holland Noord.

There is no good store around here as far I know but I am going to the pets place this afternoon.. They have those test strips that also measure CI2.

And if I want a good product I have to do it online.

I usually order at Ocean and Lake, indeed agood store.

Had also looked on the internet for the water analysis of the area where I live and there was indeed no chlorine to be found.

Just had the water tested and it's free of chlorine.
I've thrown a bag of carbon in the sump yesterday and the smell is mostly gone.
And i just noticed that the water has turned a little clowdy so the bacys are alive and well..
