Hi, I’ve had my second saltwater tank set up for about 2 months and of course cyno bacteria had to become apart of the tank. My perimeters are nitrite=0, alk=8, ph=8.2, nitrate=2, ammonia 0.2. The pictures below are what the tank looks like today and I did a water change about 3 days ago. Is this just apart of the ugly stage and should wait it out? Should I be increasing my water changes? I do them once a week. Should I be scraping off the cyno with a brush? I’m not over feeding the fish, I’ve been watching to ensure their is no wasted food floating around, and lastly I bought another power head so increase flow in some areas both 240gph for my 32g tank. Any ideas???

Vac out what you can. If its on the glass paper towels work well. It likes light so if you turn down your lights it might disappear over time.

I'm really no expert however fought a battle with this, read loads and loads of varied advice but the common points were - not enough flow & not enough dissolved oxygen.

I looked at these common points and adjusted the flow (slight increase in pump speed and slightly different angle). guaged the right placing by simply looking to see slight movement in all areas. Then added a small air stone and ran this on low (still on now!) Didn't adjust anything else and it took care of itself. Did brush off the ugliest bits when doing the weekly water change but only for aesthetic reasons and it was gone after 3-4 weeks but there was a noticeable improvement after 2 days.

My original plan was to change these bits and if that failed then to start on the whole blackout / dosing malarkey but wasn't needed in the end.

hope this helps! There are quite a few forums and plenty of reading around which is worth checking. the above is just my personal experience but i went from red disaster to clear by trying this and haven't seen it back bar once... which on checking was as i'd knocked the powerhead at some point - changed it back and it went away again.

That said every tank is different! whatever happens and whichever way you go... good luck! It really is worth fighting through!

Really great to hear you’ve beaten it next up, add more corals and fish to create new challenges If it’s not one thing it’s another! But unlike any other hobby I’ve had there’s an amazing community and all they want is to help you succeed.

The only other piece of advice I’ve been given which I will share without hesitation is: remember to forget everything you’re doing and sit back and enjoy watching the tank from time to time. It’s why we all did this in the first place
