Depends.. what do you want to stock the tank with?

2 inch is what i go with....i have had Blue Star leopard wrasse with only that amount and she/he was totaly happy

I went back and forth and eventually went with about a 2” bed because I knew I wanted a goby/shrimp pair and possibly a wrasse. I find it pretty easy to keep the sand bed looking clean by vacuuming it a bit every few water changes.

What do you potentially want a deep sand bed for? 1-2 inches of sand is more than enough. I don’t believe there’s a benefit to anything deeper in an at home reef system.

That’s the way I set my first one up about 25 years ago and I liked all the bugs and worms and critters that crawl through the sand, even though I didn’t have a clue what the heck I was doing everything went very well
That was a 65 gallon tank

Years ago deep sand beds were used by some reefers using sand with larger grains and pieces of crushed coral and shell to create more space for bacteria. However one draw back was the potential build up of gas pockets as the sand filled in with fines and detritus. If you were unlucky enough to have one occur and release into the tank it could be disastrous. I would only go that route if you are planning on keeping jawfish. The reefers i did know with true deep beds would clean them deeply every water change. When i had my jawfish i kept 2" throught and left some deeper areas where i thought it might want to dig. Worked out well.

I had mine set up for three years. I never touched the sand and everything was good until I got flatworm infestation and I could not get rid of them.
I’ll probably go with 2 inches this time that seems like what everybody is doing nowadays thank you

Agree with everyone above -- no need to have a deep sand bed. A couple inches should do just fine for what you're looking to accomplish
