I have a 18x20 frag tank and went out to purchase the parts needed at Home Depot.
Once assembled I just realized the material of the screen could be unfit for reef.

Is the regular screen material ok for a top?

It will rust and block out some light. BRS sells a clear plastic screen.

Darn it, I really liked the black screen not the white. If I paint it with Krylon, you think it would prevent the rust?
Well... I guess I will try and paint it, see how it goes. I will order the brs mesh just incase I need to swap out asap.

tyvm for the reply!

You could also use black pond netting if you can find it with a small enough sq pattern or I imagine you could use black fiberglass screen from the home improvement store in you need to have black.

I would replace the screen with bird screening from Home Depot. Just run two layers slightly overlapping so that it makes the holes smaller. I've had it over my tank for over a year now. The BRS Clear Mesh can sometimes be too thick leaving a reflection from the light in tank.

Nice on my way to Home Depot Thanks

Black bridal tulle is the best stuff I've found. If it gets dusty (like if you have a cat), just take it outside and hose it off from the water side.

The gaps seems very small, does it dilute the lights at all?

Much too lazy for that. I take it to the shower to spray it down.

went to HomeDepot and found the birdnetting. Tip for buying it... take the most messed up one to the register and ask them for a discount since no one will buy it. I got mine for 75%off, total of 2 bucks and change.

When putting it together, I tried to cross the double netting. Best I found was first net was horizontal. 2nd net I positioned it at 45*
Top came out pretty well crossed amongst itself.

Pics of my diy double birdnetting.

Total spent 8.00

One bent brown window frame 5.00 (originally 11.99)
One open roll of birdnetting 2.50 (original price 9.99)

Had an extra can of black krylon spray paint so I painted the brown metal after cutting out a section of the bottom to fit the gooseneck support. This way any metal exposed is sealed with paint.

Tyvm for the help and ideas!! :)
