Do you believe that refugiums are an essential part of a reef tank?

Do you have a "fuge" incorporated into your system? If so, how big?

Show us your fuge!

Man. I hope those are titanium brackets holding that tank up.
I do run a fuge. Half of a 75g. I toss a basketball size of algae once a month or so. Zero nitrates and .03 phosphate. I have a reactor but stopped running it about a year ago.

For me I have have never used a fuge but have always wanted to.....and I have had good luck over the years running my system(s) without one so far so there hasn't been a real need for me to run one....just water changes and monitoring for me...

Not to shoot down a fuge set up or anything..... As a matter of fact I am still (still) in the process of setting up a remote fuge for my 72gal just as an experiment....so I'll keep you guys posted when I finally finish this project

One doesn't have to use a Refugium per say but the elements of a refugium are important. Another words a Algae scrubber could take the place of a Refugium as one of the main components is Algae. Copepods can be added to the system every so often to increase their levels and don't need to be only in the refugium.

No, not essential as you will see many run very successful tanks without one. However I feel it is an extremely beneficial place for microorganisms and critters to breed and flourish and provide your tank with a natural food source.

My first 2 "reefs" were without refugiums. My current 178 with refugium has kept a lot of the pods, mysid shrimp, worms etc from my TBS rock and sand going strong. I think I'll always attach a refugium.

Not necessary but beneficial and fun.

Didn't have a fuge until my latest 140 build.I am glad I have one to grow pods and I think it is definitely helping keep my nutrients low. I had a up flow algae scrubber from my old system and added the outside red led to supplement my fuge lighting.

Absolutely functional in any reef system! A means of nutrient export through chaeto or macro algae growth! And a place for many different creatures such as mysis shrimp, copepods, amphipods, etc. the to thrive and reproduce. Think of the amount of larval offspring returning to your tank and feeding your corals. Which usually happens at night when tentacles are out.

I love having a refugium. It gives me a lot of additional surface area for biological filtration, in addition to a safe breeding grounds for pods, stomatella snails, fan worms, bristle worms, etc. It's good nutrient export, and provides a nice buffer in case your skimmer isn't working properly. Plus they're a ton of fun to watch!!!

Here's a video of mine from earlier this year...

Like others have said, not essential but a great and beneficial addition to your tank.
I run a 60g fuge on my 150g tank, a 20g fuge on my 65g tank and a 20g fuge on my 40g tank.
