Good ! Good ! You will like the synergy. I have 2 running now. A little getting them quiet at first but once it's right it's creepy quiet !
Anyway I very sure the synergy's come with a template. Just measure real careful where you want it and tape in down real good (no sliding or movement) . Very important to let the drill do the work.
Can you do it outside in the yard? If so so just tape the hose also & get the water trickle over it. I was all scared to drill at first but You will be all proud once Ya do it & Good Luck !
OhYa don't forget the glass plug. It will fall out & wack the glass below. Tape it in place or a towel on the bottom.

I’ve always used plumbers putty to create a dam for the water to stay over the drill bit. I keep a cup of water close in case I needed to add more. I’ve drilled numerous tanks, even a ten gallon, with no issues. Good luck and as said many times above, go slow!

Just wanted to say thanks for the info and motivation.
Took the plunge and drilled out my old Bio Cube so it would stop mocking me.
Everything went really well.

now I am wondering what else I should drill out. :)

I’ve used these guide cup things to drill granite counter tops and would use it to drill a tank too, though I haven’t had to do that yet. The guide is a cup that uses a double sided tape gasket to adhere to the surface. It holds the water or oil, keeps the drill bit from wandering and helps contain most of the mess.
