Somehow moisture got into your container. I'd look at getting a better container. I would use the salt without hesitation but if this is a reef tank go ahead and test the new saltwater to make sure the Cal and Alk are still within range

I had one of these lying around, so I used it: .
Could it build up over time, with just opening/closing it when going for more salt?
Referring to Instant Ocean's site, I see Cal listed, but not the Alk value; what should it be?

Moisture, be it from the ambient humidity in a room/house or droplets of water can cause the elements to defuse and chemically react. Thus the clumping.

Does your salt come in a resealable bag? I keep mine in the bag and put the bag into a sealed container

I keep my opened salt mix in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that seals it. If i get a box of salt, i open one bag and empty it into the bucket.

Stays nice and dry.

I leave mine in the bag with a clip so its definitely not sealed and I get clumps sometimes. As long as it doesnt get wet it's fine.
