It was wet rock from a tank.

Simple take…. You have ammonia! What you need to do is go get Hanna products and salifert to do your own testing. I’m willing to bet all my reef stuff that your parameters are swinging big time. And it’s ticking off the Duncan. There are times when most is good, but….. that one that does not like the parameters shows up by showing its ticked off face.

You don’t need to test ammonia or nitrite at this point

Test as much as you want... I f you are getting an ammonia reading, you should keep testing.

I saw earlier that you don’t have any other test kits besides (nitrate, nitrite, ammonia and ph) I would invest in the Red Sea test kits. They have one that contains alk, calcium and mag, which are essential test for keeping coral.

I have the API reef kit. I have been using that in addition to to the Hanna testers. I didn’t have the other totals at the time of my post

Looks like my KH and phosphate are both a little bit high

Calcium 420 ppm

Ammonia .04 ppm

Nitrate 12.9 ppm

Nitrite 96 ppb

Phosphate .11 ppm

KH 17 dkh

PH 8.4

Temp 77.9

If you are truly at 17 DKH that may be the problem, I would test alk again in case of error.

I question whether or not that is actual live rock. I bet its af or cs that was put in a tank before purchase. If alk is actually 17 than that also supports af rock possibly cs also. And no idea how long it was in a cycled system so no idea on actual life on it. That is painted/dyed rock that would have been very expensive if it was real coralline covered live rock.

API test kits are known to be quite unreliable for a reef.
What test kit are you using for Alk?
How are you testing salinity?

17dKH is unrealistically high, you would have seen precipitation of Calcium Carbonate by now if it was really this high (or rather before it would be able to climb this high).

It’s the API kit KH test
I just ordered the Hanna calcium, phosphate, and KH testers

I’ll double check on the type of rock. It was in a tank, i added the rock and sand and water, over the following week it went white in spots. I have noticed a few small brittle stars come out of the rock also.
Then Added two clowns and a royal gramma.

The following week had a small algae bloom, added a clean up crew (12 turbo snails and 12 hermit crabs) algae was eaten and subsided.
Used some night out throughout the week

Was told I cycled fully the Following week and added the juvenile yellow watchman goby, Tiger pistol shrimp, and coral Beauty. 4 days after that added two gsp’s and the Duncan and 2 Candy corals.

Following week added the 2 hammers, acro, starfish and emerald crab

Four days later added the two cardinals and the canary blenny

Last week i started using all-for-reef. Since the KH is high, i didn’t use this week.

Did a 25% water change yesterday

Api is fine if you are consistent in your testing methods and can discern the color shifts properly. Hannah calcium is a nightmare. Salifert or red sea is what I use when I want to be as close as possible or api for a quick look. Testing procedures are always the driving factor of accuracy so take your time and do it by the book.
