Most duncans ive seen have short tentacles mine are long does flow cause this will they recede will the new heads be the same way?

You have a super nice Duncan.
Mine used to do that when they were about ten heads 5 years ago.
Now they close to 150 and they won't.
Don't know what causes this but it might be a good time to test your water on all parameters so you know where you need to be.

When it was first put in they were all short now that thing blows about like an anemone it is definately my fast grower also new heads all the way around the stalk in mere months
