im a newbie at fish husbandry and i just beat digitus hydroids in my 20g by not feeding mysis for a few weeks, supposedly caused by me overfeeding shrimp in the first place

i now have a jawfish in my 80g, but am aware he may only eat frozen/shrimp?
do i need to just minimize how much i feed him, spot feed so he eats most of it, and not bother getting him onto flake, pellet, etc? i was told its very difficult to get them to eat something else in captivity, and thats their main difficulty
i have a 4-6 inch deep sandbed for him, not sure what else to do. seems to be minimal info out there
any advice or info, anecdotes anything, to help me succeed with jawfish as i love these fellas so much

he will be tankmates w a bristletooth tang, flame hawkfish, clowns, springer damsel, YWG, pistol shrimp, neon goby
