Hey there, I had the hydor pico evo -mag. On my 3 gallon and used it on my 8 gallon as well, you can adjust the flow and they have an wave deflector attachment you can buy. Very quiet.

On both my 3 gal. And 8 gal. I had a hob filter so I didnt need a return pump, I used the hydor for circulation, but you could possibly use the rio as a return pump.

Mine overheated after a month of use, it was a quarantine heater and was getting removed and cleaned during TTM.. But still it was short lived.

I ended up putting a temp controller on the hydor instead of buying a new heater all the time. I find most to be pretty unreliable, especially in a small tank. I got a finnex temp controller at the LFS for $40.

I have read a lot of things that say protein skimmers are not good for DSH tanks because they take the food out faster than the horses can eat it. Would an HOB filter be better? What about this one?-
