Hello i thought i would share a list of a few easy corals for beginners which in my experience is great to start out with. You can add the soft corals listed below when the tank has cycled properly and have a fish or two in the tank or even before fish.
Soft corals:
Green star polyp, very easy but keep in mind to place it on its own Island or be preparerad to trim it. Grows in all different type of light. 25 par and up. Invasive, any flow.
Xenia, like Green star polyp its very easy but needs to be kept in their own Island as Well. Not fuzzy about light. 25 par and up. Invasive, low to moderate flow
Kenya tree, it propegates by ”floaters” i reccomend scooping them upp and out them on a rock rubble ti attach itself there so you can easily glue it into place where you want it or sell to a fellow reefer. Not fuzzy about light. 25 par and up. Semi invasive, any flow but likes moderate best.
Mushroom coral, rhodactis and discosoma species
Can grow pretty much everywhere, some species can even grow in 0 par (i have tried it and it works) but a bit slower than the above corals listed. Semi invasive, low to moderate flow.
Lps (large stony polyp) stable params and i reccomend to test your alk, calcium, magnesium, nitrate and phosphates once a week when keeping this group of corals. 3-4 month old tank minimum.
Duncan, takes the first place here as easiest to dip your toes into lps coral category. Not so aggressive to any close corals and are very forgiving in parameter swings. 25-175 par range not very fuzzy about light.
Favia. Plating lps, quite easy semi slow growing, recomend it’s own Island because they do grow over other corals but before they do that they sting them to death. Par 50-250 par range. Moderate to high flow.
Ephyllia, this is abit contriversal but if you have stable params they are quite easy to care for in my opinion. They do have sweeper tentacles and Will sting any coral that is too close to it. Par 75-250 abit fuzzy about light. Moderate flow
Acans, blastos etc. Quite easy and thrive in a range of different flow and light. 25-175 par range. Low,moderate and high flow (high flow is contriversal but works for me)
Sps corals. Stability is key here for these guys and i recommend testing the basic params 2-3 times a week when housing these corals and about 6 months old tank for the species i list below or Signs of coralline growth.
Montipora capricon, this is by far the easiest sps coral in my opinion, when established its hard to kill. Can grow in any type of flow, any type of Lighting Almost when established. 25-300 par, low, moderate and high flow. Can even handle swings well in params. i broke a peice off (green variety easiest of all the colours) and added it to a 3 day old tank just to see if it could make it, its now 1 year and 6 months later, still alive but it has just recently started growing and started to thrive. ( dont do what i did)
Acropora green slimer is on the seccond place, when Aqua cultured it’s close to the same hardiness as the monti, this coral likes higher flow though and higher par. High flow and 150-300 par. Can also handle swings in params well.
This is my list, i hope it can help some one and feel free to comment on your thoughts of the list
