Engineer goby

My goby is changing colors for no explainable reason that I can figure out anybody got any ideas. Everything else in the tank is fine it just these 2 gobies

Have you seen a picture of adult engineers?? They get spotted and lose that black with a white line. Completely normal

Thank you I was on the verge of having a stroke i have several expensive fish and coral in that tank

Yeah they even turn blue. Once you see that color change they change and grow FAST!! Very cool to watch them grow. I miss mine. Got her when she was like 2 centimeters!

Hey man, those are cool! Can you tell me their typical day-to-day behaviors? I saw they were more active than a dartfish/firefish, but my LFS had them very small. Do they typically like to hide in caves or swim in the water columns?

I've always been a fan of eel-like creatures haha.

At the juvenile stage they are more out and about and as they start to change color they begin to be more cave dwelling but the ones I had in the past seemed to be a good mix of curious but also busy building the cave, I recently got a new juvenile engineer goby

I hope mine can grow to be quite well sized and be something of a center piece as an oddball

I had one that went through the color changes and it ended up growing very long. It was constantly sifting/moving the substrate in the tank that it started to cause the filters to clog every couple of days in the 32 biocube that it was in. I couldn't put it in the main display so I decided it was time to sell it to someone else. My filters now need cleaning on a much longer interval.

My experience with them is they are quit active I see mine all the time especially when feeding. The only draw back is they will move every square inch of sand you have and then look at your like it’s your fault that they destroyed your substrate and buried half your coral other then that there great lol

They free swim when they are tiny, then they dig and burrow. Always digging and building. My morays are more a pick a spot and hand out with their head poking out, my engineer goby was always moving sand and rocks around. I just let her do whatever she wanted. Not good if you have any corals that sit anywhere near the sandbed and you need to make sure your rocks are so sturdy. My goby caused multiple cave ins. My eels have caused 0 cave ins
