Just starting a 20G nano tank, with a built in sump at the back. I am thinking of running various types of media like carbon, coral chips and bio balls, also DT stuff like coral sand. Mech filtration will be filer socks. Is this a good alternative to a skimmer since my sump can’t fit one? Also will have a refugium.

Yes those are good options
I am assuming the coral sand is for the tank.

might not be a bad idea to use something smaller like substrate pro as a sand replacement for your fuge
