Filter sock micron

I have 75 gallons fowlr tank with sump. Pls advise which filter sock I use 100 micron 150 micron or 200 micron?

I personally run 50 micron socks but 100-200 will be ok with any system.

The higher the number the better it polishes the water..

We use all 200, and change them out every 3 days.

No, the higher the number, the more tightly woven material it is, hence the better it cleans---polishes the water.

But they also need to be changed out more often. As I said we change out every 3 days whether they need or not.

Our sump has 2 socks and we have 10 socks.

We keep the clean ones in a tote soaking in RODI water with Prime at the ready.

Hmmm, I thought the number referred to the pore size between weave. So as the number gets bigger, the larger pore size , and the coarser the weave. I think I've always used 200 microns and I change out weekly.

It's my understanding that it is the opposite of this. If you run a smaller micron size, the more will be removed from the water. I run a 50 micron in my tank therefore the socks will not let anything larger than 50 microns pass through. Hope this makes sense, it does in my head, lol

You are referring to mesh size. Mesh size is the number of openings per linear inch. The higher the mesh size the more holes per inch, the smaller the holes. When you talk about filter socks in microns the opposite is true. The micron rating is a direct measurement of the size of the hole in microns. The higher the micron rating the bigger the holes.

Mesh ratings are generally used for wire filters and the mesh filter socks. Micron ratings are used for felt filter socks (and are also used for mesh filter socks) and is the minimum size of the material it will filter out.

Saying that, I use 100 micron felt socks that I get from filterbags.com. The most common size to use that I've seen is 200 micron. That what most of the aquarium supply stores sell. With the 100 micron you take out more stuff but go through more filters.
