Hey y’all,

Starting my first salt tank in my son’s room!

I’ve had planted aquariums my whole life and recently set up pond on my patio as well! But now it’s time to venture into the deep blue sea!

I bought a 55 gal corner tank and I’m thinking of starting with just a fowlr. I’m located near a pretty awesome aquarium store and was wondering what fish are good starters and being that it’s in my sons room, do I have to run blue lights at night?

Welcome!
This is great! Definitely do the research first to see what kind of fish you'd like to have now and in the future. Not all of them get along well with each other. Unfortunately some of the cheaper hardier ones do not get along well with others in the future. Some fish are really best to have a well established tank too. Some are fine in new tanks. So much info in this arena!
You will find lots of good info on this site though for sure. Use the search feature a lot and look around at all the beautiful fish others have and decide what you like best.
You got a good size tank though! I hope to see pics in the future!

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

No, you don't have to run blue lights all night, but reef tanks need constant water flow (which means pumps will be running 24/7), as well as a protein skimmer for proper gas exchange (it's possible to do without but isn't that simple). All the equipment and flowing water makes a lot of noise, so your son's room might not be the right place for it.

I highly recommend you familiarize yourself with all the equipment you will need, the ugly phase, and the nitrogen cycle, so you don't rush the new hobby into something frustrating. It will take some time until the tank is running smoothly and looks beautiful but once you are there it was absolutely worth every moment and all the learning. :)

Welcome! I like clownfish and other damsels as starter fish. Some can be mean, so it’s best to research them first. My tanks are dark at night.
