FIRST REEF TANK STOCKING LIST!!!

Ok so my tank is 50 or 55 gallons, not cube a long tank. So I was wondering if this stocking list would work in it.
1 tang:5 inches

1 clown: 3 inches

1 mandarin: 3 inches

3 green chromis: 10 inches

2 cleaner wrasse: 6 inches

1 Mcoskers wrasse: 4 inches

1 lunar wrasse: 5 inches

1 skunk cleaner shrimp

1 Royal gramma: 4 inches

So far the equal is 41 inches which works. Yes I did put the inches to help myself. So can y’all just tell me if it is too many or they would fight? Thanks

A tang is not appropriate for a 50 gallon tank. I always argue they need at least a six foot long tank for swimming space

It is a tomini tang so it would be smaller but I could take it off the list. Is everything else fine

50g is like 40g with rocks. No tang going to survive there.

That seems like a lot of fiah. Theyre small bow, but yiu have yo olan for the fish youll have when they grow.

If you have coral, the lunar wrasse is out.

A mandarin should ibky ve added to a well established tank (like 17 mknths) so there is an adequate copepod population. They have very specific dietary needs. (Look up mandarins/dragonets and posts by PaulB on r2r)

If you want wrasses they need a sand bed. Are you bare bottom.

Looking at the list again, those are all fish that need alot of room to swim. What is it "they say" is the rule of thumb? 10 gallons per fish? I think maybe half that list would be better.

Agreed on the tang- they shouldn't be in a tank that size.
Have you looked into the specific needs of each of those fish and gow big they WILL be? Mandarins were always considered hard to keep becusse they'd get skinny and just die. Its because they have dietary needs like pods or baby brine shrimp to hunt... Up to 20,000 a day! Lunar, cleaner and most wrasses need lots of room to swim! Some need a sand bed to sleep under. They're all hunters and will eat the pods the mandarin needs and, while they're hunting, may pick at corals. Also, if your tank isn't old enough for pods yet, the wrasses may also get hungry.

It's a fun list! I am stocking wrasses, myself, right now. Just make sure you have studied the needs and quirks of each fish.

Yes it’s definitely too many cut that list in half. The inches rule doesn’t really apply to the saltwater hobby. I think the rule is stupid to begin with anyway. Because a 10 inch fish will fit in a 20 gallon tank. Will it be happy or thrive? No! And because every fish’s compatibility and territory/temperament is different this affects who will and won’t play nice together. Not to mention everyone’s scape and filtration is different. If this is your first tank I would choose easy fish and stick to the clownfish, chromis, and perhaps a goby or maybe a basslet. Or another variation of a few smallish fish.

I would recommend buying both the mandarin and cleaner wrasse as captive bred. I have both fish from Biota in a 47g doing great. I don’t know if two cleaner wrasse can coexist in a small tank, and I would recommend having a plan if you need to re-home one quickly. I have two mandarins of opposite sex though that are doing fine after a year, but getting them of opposite sex can be difficult when they’re so small. I also have two CB Banggaii Cards that are still too small to see if they’re male and female. If they turn out to be of the same sex, I’ll be moving one to my frag tank.

With the Chromis, I’ve read that they often pick each other off in small tanks until only the most dominant is left.
