First time clammer question

Got my first clam (maxima) today! I put it in the rock work which had kind of a nice natural pocket similar to the clam cradles they sell. This is ultimately where Id like this guy to stay- good flow, Par 190-200, lots of space to grow.

I just want to make sure im not making a mistake by limiting its movement by putting it in this pocket. It definitely has room to open up fully but not so sure about turning around. Thoughts?

The fear is that it would be in so tight that it can’t open up properly. I don’t see that here.

If it attaches well it should be fine, presumably the par is 300+ in that spot? If it’s not happy there I wouldn’t be surprised if it jumps out and tumbles down looking for its happy spot. Keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn’t fall into the abyss.

There is a lot of speculation about how much is enough, more is generally accepted as better. Maximas like the most light of all the clams, so watch for depositions of new shell growth on the rim where the clams mantle is.

I keep my maxima and crocea under 400 - 450 par. My derasas are under 300. Its my understanding it is difficult to give clams too much light but I know from experience it's very easy to give them too little.

My maxima gets 250 PAR and is reasonably happy - always has signs of growth, it's tripled in both length and height since I picked it up. 200 might be less than it likes, monitor it and be prepared to move it higher if you have a similarly secure spot.
